The City of Monroe is warning the public about a scam after a resident outside city limits received a call today.
The scammer is calling individuals and threatening to suspend city services. The City of Monroe reminds the public that local government and law enforcement agencies will never contact anyone to request payment for something over the phone.
The City of Monroe and law enforcement officials advise individuals not to respond to these calls and never give out any personal information. Law enforcement officials confirmed scammers are able to “spoof” official phone numbers, including the City of Monroe, which means that the receiver believes that it is a valid call.
The City of Monroe and the Benton County Sheriff’s Office advise individuals to never give out credit card numbers and expiration dates, bank account numbers, dates of birth, or social security numbers to unsolicited callers.
If you receive a call like this hang-up and immediately contact the Benton County Sheriff’s Office. The Oregon Consumer Protection Hotline is 1-877-9392 if you feel you have been scammed.
